“Put everything which mustn’t get wet in these baskets…!” the skipper must be serious. It’s time to go! Rainwear on, helmet on, life jackets round our necks - and to the boat. The skipper steers my friends and me to the front bench of the rubber boat, where the best places are apparently to be found. After the paddling and safety instructions we paddle our little Titanic briskly towards the foaming mass of the river Muonio. The first kilometers are gentle, but the pace picks up after the Pahtonen rapids. Ahead booms Saarikoski "möyhä“. "Now you can scream, but don’t open your mouth!” yells the skipper. Paddling briskly we also survive the swells of Äijäkoski and the route through Märkäkorva. With the landing place in sight, I can’t believe that I have paddled for 6 kilometres - but thinking about it there are four rapids and a drop of 24 metres en route! "Did you get wet?” asks the skipper with a twinkle in his eye. My damp shirt dries nicely in the warmth of the camp fire while I slurp my coffee.

The river trip begins from Enontekiö area about 50 kilometers north from Muonio. The first part will go through the great rapids of Palojoki. Midway we will have a coffee break and a small snack. The trip will end with a lunch cooked on open fire and black pot coffee. During the trip fishing is also possible at the excellent locations.
